Learning Agreement & Credit Transfer

After you have agreed to accept the exchange place offered to you, you will receive an email with your next steps (enrollment at the partner university, planning your choice of course for the semester abroad, etc.). Your host university, the Economics Exchange Office and the LMU International Office will be happy to provide you with information on how to organize your stay abroad, but ultimately your own initiative is also required here. For this reason, please read the information below carefully.

Next Steps

1. Nomination and enrollment at partner university

The Economics Exchange Office will nominate you at the partner university. We will inform you via e-mail as soon as we have officially nominated you as an exchange student at the respective partner university. The nomination period differs depending on the university and the timing of your stay abroad (for the winter term, usually March–May; for the spring term, usually only in fall).

In most cases, you will then receive further information from the host university regarding the registration and registration deadline. Normally you must register online with the host university, similar to the Erasmus application process at the LMU, and then send the application form and all relevant documents directly to the host university. Please be aware that the registration process and necessary documents vary significantly between universities. We encourage you to search independently through the host university's website for relevant information regarding the registration process, deadlines, and required documents.

All important documents for your stay with Erasmus (e.g., Erasmus Scholarship) will be provided directly from the LMU International Office via e-mail.

2. Pre-approval of study credits

To ensure that your courses taken abroad can be transferred into your studies, the possibility of credit transfer can be assessed before the beginning of a study abroad semester. It is recommended that you first apply for pre-approval after you have received a study spot and after the final course offering of the university has been made available. Course lists of several universities cannot be checked in advance. Please also take into consideration that at many universities exchange students may only choose from a select offering. There may also be participation prerequisites as well. For that reason, you need to clarify with the host university in advance which courses you are permitted to enroll in.
  • You can submit only one application for pre-approval. Courses cannot be split into multiple applications.
  • Fill in this template and send it (as xlsx file) to exchange@econ.lmu.de from your student email address. Only complete applications will be processed. Inquiries from email addresses other than campus email (@campus.lmu.de) will not be responded to.
  • A maximum of 6 courses per semester/12 courses for a year abroad can be checked in advance for possible credit transfer. It is your responsibility to ensure that courses are actually offered and eligible for you. Later changes are not possible.
  • Before submitting the application, consultation with the Economics Exchange Program Manager regarding possible credit transfer is highly recommended.

3. ERASMUS+ Learning Agreement

The recognition of credits abroad for studies at LMU is carried out using so-called learning agreements. A Learning Agreement (LA) is a contract concluded at the beginning of your stay abroad that determines which courses you will take abroad and which LMU modules can be replaced by these courses. The LA thus specifies the maximum framework for the recognition of study credits abroad and only credits listed in the LA can be transferred after your return to LMU.
  • General information regarding the Online Learning Agreement (OLA) is provided in the moodle course "Erasmus-Outgoing akademisches Jahr 20XX/XX". The Moodle course is hosted by the International Office, you receive the enrollment key via e-mail from the International Office.
  • Only when it is finally clear which courses you will actually attend and the credit options have been clarified, create your OLA. There is no advantage in wanting to prepare an LA as early as possible. Experience has shown that it is best not to complete this until course operations at the host university have been stable for around 1-2 weeks.
  • In the OLA you fill in your pre-approved courses only. The OLA can only be signed if the transfer of credits has been preapproved (see step 2.) Please read the following instructions specific for Economic students on how to fill in the OLA (esp. Table B):
  • Shold your OLA be rejected, you can view the reason on the OLA platform at the very end of your OLA (below the Commitment section).
  • Should changes become necessary for reasons for which you are not responsible, you must use the changes section of the OLA. Please be sure to coordinate the change with the Economics Exchange Office before formalizing the changes section.

If there is any confusion please attend the consultation hours.

4. Transfer of credits

After your return to LMU, you must apply for the transfer of credits. The official transcript from your host university is required to carry out the transfer of credits. Statements about grade conversion can also only be made once the official transcript is available. You do not have to take credit for all courses included in Table A of the LA, however, only credits of courses that are listed in the Learning Agreement can be transferred. Please note the deadlines for the application of credit transfer below.

Please send the following documents completed and signed to exchange@econ.lmu.de and only use your campus email address:

  • Application for Transfer of Credits/Antragsformular zur Anrechnung von Studienleistungen
    1. Complete only electronically
    2. Enter the semester in the form: "WS 20xx/20yy" or "SoSe 20xx"
    3. Enter the lecturer/examiner with the highest academic degree
    4. Enter the intended LMU module for the course to be transferred to
    5. Sign application
  • Transcript of Records
  • Confirmation that the stay abroad has been recorded in LSF: Students are obliged to record all study-related stays abroad. For this purpose, the function "Stays abroad" is available in LSF. Afterward, a confirmation can be downloaded as a PDF file from the "Stays abroad" function in LSF.
As a result, you will receive a confirmation of credit transfer and the services will be booked into your LSF transcript. The confirmation of recognition also serves as proof that the foreign courses have been recognized within the framework of ERASMUS. Thus, you do not need Part III of the Learning Agreement. A copy of your transcript that you print yourself serves as sufficient proof of credit transfer for the RIA.
